You are asked to take part in a scientific study. Participation is voluntary. Participation requires your
written consent. Before you decide whether you want to participate in this study, you will be given an
explanation about what the study involves. Please read this information carefully.
1. General information
This study has been designed by Nina Bremmers and Hannah van Iterson for Eindhoven University of Technology and is
being carried out by Nina Bremmers and Hannah van Iterson.
2. Purpose of the study
The goal of this study is to get insights into the reaction and emotions around the behaviour of a robot vacuum
cleaner. Through this research, we hope to develop an idea of what are wanted and unwanted traits of a ‘smart’ home
appliance, specifically on the aspect of having a ‘will’ or ‘personality’
3. What participation involves
During the study, the following will happen:
- on the next page, you will find yourself in a scenario, as you go through this story, you will have some point at
which you can make a set of choices. Try to imagine yourself into this story, and think of what you personally would
think, do and feel. There are no wrong or correct answers, it is about your experience.
- at the end of the scenario, you will get a result on the ‘personality’ of your vacuum cleaner, we ask you to fill
in a survey about your perception of this result and your overall experience.
The two parts both take anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes. Thus, the the full study will take between 10 and 20
minutes to complete.
In order to carry out the study properly it is important that you follow the study instructions.
4. If you do not want to participate or you want to stop participating in the study
It is up to you to decide whether or not to participate in the study. Participation is voluntary.
If you do participate in the study, you can always change your mind and decide to stop, at any time during the
study. The answers you give during the scenario will only be send and saved once you reach the results page. If you
wish to stop, you can always close the webpage, and no results will be send.
5. Usage and storage of your data
Your anwers will be collected, used and stored for this study. This concerns data such as your choices during the
scenario, the scores you give in the survey and your explanations of them. The collection, use and storage of your
data is required to answer the questions asked in this study and to publish the results. We ask your permission for
the use of your data
Confidentiality of your data No identifiable data will be collected. Even if the researchers you who you are,
personal data will never be linked to your study data. The data cannot be traced back to you in reports and
publications about the study.
Access to your data for verification
Some people can access all your data at the research location. Including the data without a code. This is necessary
to check whether the study is being conducted in a good and reliable manner. Persons who have access to your data
for review are: Emilia Viaene. They will keep your data confidential. We ask you to consent to this access.
Retention period of your data
Your data must be kept for 1.5 years at the research location TU/Eindhoven.

Wij vragen u om mee te doen aan een wetenschappelijk onderzoek.
Meedoen is vrijwillig. Voordat u beslist of u wilt meedoen aan dit onderzoek, krijgt u uitleg over wat het
onderzoek inhoudt. Lees deze informatie rustig door.
1. Algemene informatie
Dit onderzoek is opgezet door Nina Bremmers en Hannah van Iterson voor de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven en wordt
gedaan door Nina Bremmers en Hannah van Iterson.
2. Doel van het onderzoek
Het doel van dit onderzoek is inzicht krijgen in uw reactie en gevoelens rondom het doen en laten van een robot
stofzuiger. Door dit onderzoek hopen we een beeld te ontwikkelen van gewenste en niet gewenste eigenschappen van een
‘slim’ huishoud apparaat, met name op het gebied van het hebben van een ‘eigen wil’.
3. Wat meedoen inhoudt
Tijdens het onderzoek zal het volgende gebeuren:
1) op de volgende pagina zal een scenario geschets worden, op basis van de situaties kunt u op bepaalde momenten
keuzes maken. Leef u in in dit scenario en probeer te bedenken wat u zou doen of vinden. Het gaat erom wat u zou
doen, er zijn geen goede of foute antwoorden
2) aan het einde van het scenario zult u een resultaat krijgen over de ‘persoonlijkheid’ van uw robot, we vragen u
mening over dit resultaat en uw ervaring een vragenlijst invullen.
De twee onderdelen duren beide tussen de 5 en 10 minuten. Het gehele onderzoek duurt dus tussen de 10 en 20 minuten
om volledig te doen.
Om het onderzoek goed te laten verlopen is het belangrijk dat u zich aan de instructies houdt.
4. Als u niet wilt meedoen of wilt stoppen met het onderzoek
U beslist zelf of u meedoet aan het onderzoek. Deelname is vrijwillig.
Als u wel meedoet, kunt u zich altijd bedenken en toch stoppen, ook tijdens het onderzoek. De gegevens van de
antwoorden die u invult worden pas verzonden als u bij de resultaten pagina komt. Als u wilt stoppen, kunt u altijd
de webpagina sluiten, er zullen geen gegevens verzonden worden.
5. Gebruik en bewaren van uw gegevens
Voor dit onderzoek worden uw antwoorden gebruikt en bewaard. Het gaat om gegevens zoals uw keuzes tijdens het
scenario, de scores die u geeft in de vragenlijst en eventuele uitleg daarbij. Het verzamelen, gebruiken en bewaren
van uw gegevens is nodig om de vragen die in dit onderzoek worden gesteld te kunnen beantwoorden en de resultaten te
kunnen publiceren. Wij vragen voor het gebruik van uw gegevens uw toestemming.
Vertrouwelijkheid van uw gegevens
Geen identificeerbare gegevens zullen worden verzameld. Ook als de onderzoekers weten wie u bent, zullen er nooit
persoonsgegevens gekoppelt worden aan de data. Ook in rapporten en publicaties over het onderzoek zijn de gegevens
niet tot u te herleiden.
Toegang tot uw gegevens voor controle
Sommige personen kunnen op de onderzoekslocatie toegang krijgen tot alle data. Dit is nodig om te kunnen controleren
of het onderzoek goed en betrouwbaar is uitgevoerd. Personen die ter controle inzage kunnen krijgen in uw gegevens
zijn: Emilia Viaene. Zij houden uw gegevens geheim. Wij vragen u voor deze inzage toestemming te geven.
Bewaartermijn gegevens
Uw gegevens moeten 1.5 jaar worden bewaard op de onderzoekslocatie TU/Eindhoven
